Biofuel from Palm Oil-Is it Sustainable?Sometimes when I read about biofuel from palm oil, I shudder and worry. Are we on an adventure to prove Malaysia Boleh again?
The number of licences being issued to early entrants which may not be financially capable to take the vagaries of the price of palm oil on a long term basis, is simply frightening. It's no wonder then that many had not even started on their projects after receiving the licences. That has prompted the Ministry of Plantation Industry to review the matter of these licences eventhough they are issued by MIDA.
Prime Minister Abdullah's caution a week ago, that we should be mindful that palm oil is also a food and we should therefore balance our priorities should be adhered to. As such, MIDA should be reviewing the number of licences that have been issued and withdraw from those which are unlikely to ever use them.
